Decimus
Those Naziesque, British hating Eurocrats have only gone and done it again! They've brought in new tariffs against shite, Chinese steel that crumbles as soon as you look at it, adding extra protection for quality made, British steel. The British government, which clearly loves the manual labouring idiots who voted to leave, has demonstrated its affection by predictably lambasting the idea. A statement on behalf of the P.M. states that "We don't think it is a decision that reflects a free and open approach to trade." So there you have it leave voters, you know what to expect once we are out. Taking back your country? Do me a fucking favour. The government will sell out workers at a drop of a hat in favour of cheap, Chinese shit, and there will be no E.U. to stop them. Never mind, eh? Enjoy your brave new world. Idiots.

This is a bureaucrat's assessment, beloved by Brussels and assorted government administrators, known for only thinking in straight lines, the consequence of which is complex rule-setting, intervention, tariffs and if all else fails, throwing tax-payer's money at a problem. Firstly, Chinese roll and heavy plate steel does not "crumble as soon as you look at it". Now, the EU will impose tariffs of 75% on imported Chinese steel but will wonder why China will apply up to 265% tariffs on manufactured goods from Europe. Britain, along with Holland and the Scandinavian governments opposed the tariff as they have realised that domestic steel makers are now concentrating on specialist steels and alloys (using cheep steel as a raw material - now no longer available) as well as carbon and composite materials. They are also aware that the value of manufactured exported goods is far higher than imported Chinese steel. Something else you may wish to consider; The UK by being seen to oppose steel tariffs (knowing that the Brits would be overruled by the Eurocrats) will have earned considerable brownie points once the country is free from the Euro-shackle and will be better positioned to negotiate a tariff free trade deal with China making the UK exports much cheaper than its European competitors. Look at the bigger picture...
Guest Lady Penelope
We also have all sorts of bonkers EU rules pushing infrastructure costs to out of control levels. Thw Great Western railway electrification being an example where because of rules that are more relevant to France mean that the overhead power structures and supports are far heavier than actually required. Guest Lady Penelope
We also do not have a land border with any mainland European Country. I could for example walk from Torquay to Exeter in an afternoon. However if I tried to walk the slightly shorter distance from Dover to Calais I would quickly get salt water up my nose. Look at the bigger picture... First of all, the type of Chinese steel that is used to reinforce concrete, is of an incredibly low standard, and actually poses a significant health and safety risk. I haven't plucked this information out of thin air, or mined google for biased reports to back up my claims, I don't need to because it is a fact. My father-in-law is a welder, and within his profession it is well known that inclusions in Chinese steel rebar, mainly Boron, significantly increases the risk of a weld cracking. As for the British steel industry concentrating on specialist steel and alloys, they have not got much choice in going down a more specialist route, as standard Chinese steel flooding the market doesn't make it easy for them to compete in less specialist production. Whether the value of the subsequent manufactured goods is higher than imported Chinese goods I can't say, but I'll take your word for it. But what I can say is that if Chinese steel was subjected to a much higher tariff, British steel would be able to compete more effectively and further increase the value of our exports. Will the Chinese then increase their tariffs in response? Maybe, but by working with the E.U., and the new American administration we can force the Chinese to the negotiating table. They are an economy driven by exports, and the western world in theory has the ability to cripple its economy if it so wishes. What can the U.K. do on it's own? From the government's perspective, and from yours, they wish to keep the status quo and make it easier to trade with the Chinese by opposing restrictive tariffs. That's fine and adheres to free market principles, but is it better or worse in the long run for British manufacturing and jobs? If Brexit is about taking back control from Europe, is it now also about whoring ourselves to China and the rest of the world to keep our economy afloat at the expense of British jobs? I've looked at the bigger picture, and I say that it's better the devil you know, and within 15 years people will realise we were better off in the E.U. all along. Pretty much like everything else in this country since Thatcherism, sold to overseas interests as is was seen as a liability. The sooner we rid ourselves of this club that is intransigent to change, the better we can direct our ire to the sacks of shit of all political persuasions in Westminster. I'm 100% EU and want a United States of Europe as it would be a far more culturally sophisticated than America or China. We have better brains and a sounder world view than the aforementioned goons, and don't have the burning desire to police entire planet. Britain however, much to my shame, is too immature as a society to cope with the levels of cooperation that this would require. We'll never be able to cope with immigration until we stop regarding it as such

The problem will always be that stretch of water between us and the European mainland. It is similar to that issue of water between th UK and Ireland .. yes we can cooperate but no we can never be an intergeral part of it as the issue of Ireland and the UK has proved over a long period of time. If you want to be that integeral part of what is the EU then you need to move yourself over there.
