CCArchive
I''m indebted to spot for this nomination. I was reading one of his comments about the titanic pricks circling the spot where it went down 100 years to the day. He''s right, it is mawkish. Mawkishness is something that''s crept into our culture in the last few years. The days of the fabled British "stiff upper lip" sadly seem to have gone. We now seem to be inundated with public displays of insincere sadness. Take Muamba, an entire football ground full of bloody atheists who have never before set foot in a church, stood there in silent prayer for a bloke who they''d not hesitate to start using the "N" word with if he changed to another team. The Manchester united display of self pity for the 50th anniversary of the air crash that killed seven of their players is another that springs to mind. Every time we have a "Hillsborough" anniversary, Sheffield fills up with scousers on a tear fuelled pilgrimage. We had a minutes silence for Ken Bigley when he was killed. You wouldn''t do that for someone on your street with whom you were on "nodding terms" with so why for someone you''ve never met. It''s an endless wave of emotional incontinence. It needs to stop. It''s cuntish.
